Week 2: Numbers, Prices, Colors & Market Thai
Goal
By the end of this lesson you can ask prices, understand common numbers, buy one or two items, and avoid awkward bargaining mistakes.
You will learn:
- numbers 0–100
- the special Thai forms for 20 and final 1
- how prices sound in real markets
- how to ask, buy, decline, and ask for a bag
- when bargaining is normal and when it is not
1. Numbers 0–10

2. Building bigger prices

Two patterns matter most:
- 20 is ยี่สิบ, not “สองสิบ”.
- A final 1 becomes เอ็ด: 11, 21, 31, 101.
3. Market phrases

| Ask for discount | ลดได้ไหมครับ / คะ | lót dâai mái khrap/kha? | Can you discount? |
| Decline politely | ไม่เอา ขอบคุณครับ / ค่ะ | mâi ao, khàawp-khun khrap/kha | I do not want it, thank you. |
| Ask for bag | มีถุงไหมครับ / คะ | mii thǔng mái khrap/kha? | Do you have a bag? |
4. Bargaining culture
Bargaining is okay in:
- tourist markets
- clothes/souvenir stalls
- some local markets without printed prices
Do not bargain in:
- cafes and restaurants
- convenience stores
- supermarkets and malls
- places with fixed printed prices
Better beginner phrase than “too expensive”:
ลดได้นิดหน่อยไหมครับ / คะ
lót dâai nít-nòi mái khrap/kha?
Can you discount a little?
5. Mini dialogue: buying mangoes
Student: สวัสดีครับ อันนี้เท่าไหร่ครับ
sà-wàt-dii khrap, an-níi thâo-rài khrap?
Hello, how much is this?
Seller: ห้าสิบบาทค่ะ
hâa-sìp bàat kha
50 baht.
Student: เอาสองอันครับ มีถุงไหมครับ
ao sǎawng an khrap, mii thǔng mái khrap?
I will take two. Do you have a bag?
Seller: มีค่ะ

6. Listening practice with prices
Ask your teacher to say these prices in random order. You write the number.
- 20 บาท
- 35 บาท
- 50 บาท
- 80 บาท
- 100 บาท
- 150 บาท
7. Real-life mission
- Ask a price using อันนี้เท่าไหร่ครับ/คะ.
- Buy one item using เอาหนึ่งอันครับ/ค่ะ.
- Send your teacher a voice note saying three prices in Thai.
